Bringing Stories to Life: FLCCA’s Literacy Night Sparks Joy in Reading

Stories & Spotlights
FLCCA Literacy Night

Ready, set, literacy! At Florida Cyber Charter Academy (FLCCA), learning goes far beyond the screen, and this March, students and families came together to celebrate the power of literacy in a big way! Literacy is at the heart of student success, and events like Literacy Night provide meaningful opportunities for students to practice the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills they develop in their daily lessons while connecting those skills to authentic experiences.

On March 10th, FLCCA hosted its highly anticipated Literacy Night, welcoming more than 450 elementary students and over 90 middle school students for an evening filled with creativity, imagination, and connection. Designed to engage learners of all ages, the event featured interactive, grade-level sessions that made literacy come alive in fun and meaningful ways. Families joined their students for this special event, creating a shared learning experience that highlighted the important role families play in supporting literacy development at home.

A Night of Imagination for Every Learner

Each session was thoughtfully tailored to meet students where they are in their learning journey while encouraging a love of reading and self-expression. Activities centered around enhancing the skills taught in classes and showing real-life use of those skills. By connecting classroom strategies to interactive activities, students were able to see how the literacy skills they practice during live lessons translate into real-world communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

K–2: Monsters, Rhymes, and Silly Times

Our youngest learners stepped into a world of playful storytelling, where silly characters, rhymes, and music set the stage for creativity. Students laughed, participated, and explored language through rhythm and imagination, building early literacy skills in an engaging and memorable way. Through activities focused on rhyming, sound patterns, and storytelling, students strengthened foundational literacy skills such as phonological awareness and vocabulary development.

Literacy coach Krissi Campbell added, “It was a chance to stop and celebrate literacy and why it’s important to be literate.” These early experiences with language help students build confidence and curiosity, two key ingredients for developing lifelong readers.

Grades 3–5: Mad Libs Mania

Elementary students dove into the world of word parts with a high-energy Mad Libs session. Filled with laughter and surprises, this activity encouraged students to think about parts of speech while creating their own hilarious stories, proving that grammar can be both educational and fun.

“Students were encouraged to think more deeply about how words function within a sentence,” Mrs. Campbell shared. “By identifying parts of speech like adjectives, nouns, and verbs during Mad Libs, students could see how word choice shapes meaning and brings their stories to life.”

By actively applying their knowledge of grammar within a creative activity, students were able to reinforce important language skills while collaborating and sharing ideas with peers. Moments like these help students see that writing and grammar are not just academic tasks but tools that allow them to express their creativity and personality.

Middle School: Overcoming Challenges

Middle school students participated in a thoughtful and interactive discussion centered around the theme of overcoming challenges. Using a Socratic seminar format, students shared ideas, listened to different perspectives, and built critical thinking skills while connecting literature to real-life experiences. Socratic seminars encourage students to support their thinking with textual evidence, ask meaningful questions, and respectfully respond to differing viewpoints.

Grades 6–12 literacy coach Dr. Michelle Crespo-Melendrez highlighted how this age group is more independent and benefited from “bringing in examples of evidence related to what they were learning in class.” Students practiced citing examples, building arguments, and explaining their reasoning—skills that are essential for academic success and future college and career readiness.

“These discussions allow students to transfer class skills to topics outside the classroom and celebrate what they’ve learned,” Dr. Crespo-Melendrez stated. “It’s an opportunity to hear if the students are understanding what’s being taught in live lessons.” The conversation-centered format also gave students a chance to practice speaking and listening skills in a supportive environment while reflecting on themes that relate to their own experiences.

Building Community Through Literacy

One of the most powerful aspects of Literacy Night was the sense of connection it fostered. While FLCCA is an online school, events like this provide valuable opportunities for students to engage with peers and teachers in real time. These shared experiences strengthen the school community and remind students that learning is both collaborative and joyful.

From laughter-filled activities to meaningful discussions, students were not only strengthening their literacy skills; they were also building confidence, communication abilities, and a sense of belonging within the FLCCA community. By creating space for students to interact, question, and share ideas, Literacy Night highlighted how literacy supports not just academic growth but also personal expression and connection.

Our literacy coaches provided some words of wisdom to continuously encourage literacy across FLCCA’s student body. Dr. Crespo-Melendrez keeps her appreciation for literacy simple: “Read what you love! If you read what you love, you’ll love reading.” Encouraging students to find books that spark their interests helps build reading stamina and cultivates a lifelong habit of reading.

Mrs. Campbell also motivates students to continue pursuing literacy skills by emphasizing, “Reading is the key that opens the door to knowledge. It can be difficult, but it’s always worth it.” Both coaches emphasized that literacy is a journey, and every book, discussion, and activity helps students grow as readers and thinkers.

A Night to Remember

With more than 540 total attendees, Literacy Night was a clear success. The enthusiasm from students, families, and our literacy coaches highlighted just how impactful these shared experiences can be. Events like this demonstrate the power of engaging students in learning experiences that combine academic skills with creativity and collaboration.

At FLCCA, literacy is more than reading; it’s about storytelling, connection, and empowering students to find their voice. Events like Literacy Night remind us that when learning is engaging and inclusive, it leaves a lasting impression. By celebrating literacy in creative ways, FLCCA continues to nurture confident readers, thoughtful communicators, and curious learners.

We can’t wait to see what stories our students will tell next!
