Piano Keys and Possibilities: Catherine’s FLCCA Journey

Stories & Spotlights

We’re excited to introduce you to Catherine, a rising senior at Florida Cyber Charter Academy (FLCCA), who has been learning online since second grade. Her family first explored different school models through their local Sarasota-area network, eventually discovering the K12-powered online program at FLCCA that would become a perfect fit.

“I was always interested in learning options beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar environment,” says Cristina, Catherine’s mom. “We were nervous at first, but once we got started, we loved it. The flexibility, the community, and the support from FLCCA have been incredible.”

Learning Through Life’s Challenges

That flexibility became even more important two years ago when Cristina was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

“When she was dealing with her treatments, we often had to drive over an hour away,” Catherine explained. “I could just take my computer with me and keep up with my classes. I didn’t fall behind, and I could even watch lesson recordings later if I needed to.”

Her mom added, “The teachers were so understanding and patient. They extended deadlines, gave extra chances to redo assignments, and were always an email away.”

A Passion for Piano

Outside of school, Catherine has a deep love for music. She has been playing piano for over six years, often composing her own melodies and performing wherever there’s a piano – whether that’s at home, at events, or even in hospital lobbies to lift patients’ spirits.

“I usually just make up my own stuff,” Catherine said with a smile. “People tell me I have a talent for it, and I’d like to maybe make my own music in the future.”

Her mom recalled, “When she was younger, if there was a piano around, she wasn’t shy. She’d sit down and start playing. People loved hearing her.”

Dreams for the Future

Looking ahead, Catherine plans to pursue cosmetology after high school, specializing in hairstyling and nails, while continuing to grow as a musician. She’s also interested in voice lessons, dance, and even digital art.

“I’m really into the arts,” she said. “I’d like to keep playing piano, and maybe volunteer or perform at events. And with virtual school, I’ve had the time to explore all of these interests.”

Why Virtual Learning Works

For Catherine and her family, FLCCA has been more than just a school, it’s created a lifestyle that supports learning while allowing room for creativity and life’s unpredictable moments.

“Life happens, and with virtual school, education fits into it,” Catherine said. “I love being able to stay home, travel if we need to, and still keep up with my classes.”

Cristina summed it up simply: “It’s given us freedom, flexibility, and opportunities we never would have had otherwise.”
