Four Boys, One Virtual Classroom: How FLCCA Helps One Family Learn, Grow and Thrive

Stories & Spotlights
FLCCA Helps One Family Learn, Grow and Thrive

When Chekesha and her husband first enrolled their oldest son in Florida Cyber Charter Academy (FLCCA), they couldn’t have known that one day all four of their boys would attend. Or that virtual learning would help each of them discover their strengths, passions, and independence.

Today, their home is a lively place filled with learning, laughter, and support. Their four sons – Daniel (17), James (12), Evan (10), and Sebastian (7) – have each found their own rhythm in the online classroom.

School – That Feels Like Home

Chekesha first turned to FLCCA when Daniel was starting kindergarten. After a positive experience, the family returned several years later. And this time, they stayed.

“When COVID hit, we decided to bring everyone back to FLCCA,” she said. “It was a no-brainer. My kids did so well here before, and we knew it was the right choice again.”

Since returning, the boys have flourished. Daniel, now a high school senior, takes mostly honors classes and has developed a love for psychology and science. “He’s thinking about becoming a child psychologist,” Chekesha shared proudly.

James, her seventh grader, excels in accelerated math and language arts and recently discovered a passion for baking after participating in the K12 Cook-Off. “He made this incredible lemon meringue cake from scratch,” said Chekesha. “Now he’s talking about being the next Cake Boss!”

Evan, in fifth grade, found his dream career after a virtual career day with a marine biologist. “He’s been fascinated with the ocean ever since,” she said. “He told me, ‘That’s what I want to do.’”

And little Sebastian, a second grader, has blossomed into an independent learner. “He had a rough start in kindergarten,” Chekesha recalled. “But his first-grade teacher really helped him build confidence. Now he’s the first one to log in, check his schedule, and tell me when class starts. He even makes his morning smoothie because he says it helps his brain wake up.”

Learning Independence, One Lesson at a Time

With four students learning under one roof, Chekesha has created a system that works for everyone.

Each child has a designated learning space. Daniel studies in his room with jazz music playing, James and Sebastian have their own desks, and Evan prefers to work up front in the home where “the action” is.

“They’re all so different, but it works,” said Chekesha. “They even help each other. If I’m helping one, one of the older boys will jump in to help his brother. It’s teamwork.”

That teamwork extends beyond academics. The boys often go on family bike rides or outdoor adventures after school – a routine that keeps them active and connected.

Support Leads to Success

For Chekesha, one of the biggest benefits of FLCCA is knowing her children are fully supported. She’s also been impressed with the responsiveness of the staff.

“We had an issue once, and the principal immediately called me – even though it wasn’t her student,” she said. “She coordinated everything so quickly. That meant so much to me.”

The Power of Education

Education is a cornerstone for both Chekesha and her husband, who emphasize to their boys that learning opens doors.

“We always tell them: education is everything,” she said. “Even if you change your mind about what you want to do in life, you need a foundation. And FLCCA gives them that – with teachers who care and classes that inspire them.”

As a full-time working mom, Chekesha also appreciates the virtual school model. “I work from home, so I can be there for them when they need me,” she said. “My husband works outside the home, so we tag-team. It just works for our family.”

Would Chekesha recommend FLCCA to others? Absolutely.

“My boys are thriving – academically, socially, and personally,” she said. “FLCCA has helped them find who they are and what they love. For us, it’s been the best decision we could’ve made.”
