Three Ways to Encourage a Love of Reading this National Literacy Month
At Florida Cyber Charter Academy (FLCCA), we see every day how reading strengthens critical thinking and sparks imagination. As we celebrate National Literacy Month throughout September, families can take small but powerful steps to help children discover reading as both fun and fulfilling.
Here are three ideas to get started:
- Add Reading into Your Daily Routine
Consistency matters. Set aside a specific time each day for reading, whether it’s a few minutes before lessons begin, a quiet afternoon break, or winding down before bed. Just 15 minutes a day can help your student make steady progress and shows that reading is an important part of the day.
- Offer a Variety of Reading Options
Not everyone is drawn to the same type of book. Some FLCCA students may connect with audiobooks, eBooks, or graphic novels, while others enjoy a traditional paperback book. Offering a variety of formats makes reading more accessible and ensures every student finds something that sparks their interest.
- Celebrate Their Reading Achievements
Positive reinforcement goes a long way. Celebrate when your child finishes a book, discovers a new author, or starts a new series. Recognition can be as simple as displaying finished books on a shelf or giving a “reading shoutout” at family dinner. These small celebrations keep motivation high and can lead to a love of reading.
At FLCCA, we believe every child deserves to experience the joy of reading. This National Literacy Month, take time to explore a book with your student. You may be surprised by where their imagination leads.
